BFD/BEFD Static Fire Dampers with Multiple Blades by Beta Industrial

Accurate fire isolation in air distribution networks is based on the correct selection and installation of dampers operating in Static (Fans Off) mode, where, in case of fire, the ducts must be securely cut off without fans. This is where Beta Industrial, lone of the leading manufacturers, comes to the fore with its expansive range of multi-blade UL classified static fire damper BFD/BEFD offerings. Our UL Classified BFD/BEFD multipane models demonstrate the required fire resistance and compliance with UL 555, NFPA 90A standards and SMACNA.

We provide the desired models with a set of execution options, including an ordering key. Our team of experts also assists with installation instructions and recommendations for the configuration of sleeve, actuator, and safety release to achieve the desired fire rating.

What is BFD/BEFD and Why Choose Them

The BFD (3 hr) model is designed for fire-blocking structures in static applications where three-hour fire resistance is required. Alternatively, the BEFD (11⁄2 hr) model is designed for an hour and a half. Both models are available with a galvanized-steel sleeve 400 mm deep and 1.1 mm thick, or as “-XS” versions without a sleeve; for round-duct integration, select BFD/R or BEFD/R with round spigots. Temperature-responsive releases include UL Listed 165F and 212F fusible links, a 165F resettable thermoelectric device (TRD), and a TRD + 212F fusible-link combination. Motorized variants use BELIMO or HONEYWELL actuators.

Product Features and Design

Construction and Execution

The frame features a hat-shaped profile made of galvanized steel. The blades are 3-V made of the same steel, the supports are on bronze bushings, and the axles and mechanical linkage are hidden in the frame. Stainless steel jamb seals are installed on the racks for a snug fit. In non-motorized versions, the manual locking quadrant is used. It is also available as an option for motorized vcd versions. The range includes single-sections and multi-section assemblies; for ultra-small sizes, a sleeve-mounted reducer is provided.

System Parameters and Leaks

The dampers are designed for static systems. In case of fire, they isolate the duct without the use of fans. The level of leaks and pressure drops has been confirmed by AMCA 500-D tests on standard sizes from the specification. The choice of model is determined by the required fire resistance limit: BFD provides three hours, BEFD — one and a half hours. This approach maintains the stability of the opening overlap and meets the requirements of UL 555 and NFPA 90A.

Installation, Connections and Tolerances

The basic orientation of the installation is vertical; the sleeve mounting scheme, the indents and the depth of the node are specified in the instructions. Retaining angles made of galvanized steel are fixed with bolts, welding in the corners is not applied, the bolts are removed from the blade travel area. SMACNA breakaway connections are allowed for air ducts, including S-shaped connections. When exceeding the size limits, steel mullions are used, while the supports are removed from the flow, and the sub-openings are air-ducted separately.

Specification and Order by Code

The ordering key structure simplifies the choice of mode and execution. Designations: B — three-hour BFD, BE — one-and-a-half-hour BEFD; FD - multi-blade damper without drive, MFD - motorized version. The /Rd suffix indicates a version with round spigots (up to 32"), and “-XS” indicates a version without a sleeve. BELIMO or HONEYWELL drives are available on request. This code eliminates ambiguity and speeds up the order processing.

Why Beta Industrial

Our range of solutions have UL Classified (R21930) status and are accompanied by detailed wiring diagrams, a set of actuator, TRD and fusible link options, as well as a detailed ordering key, which allows you to select BFD (3 hr) or BEFD (11⁄2 hr) for the specified Static mode, the necessary sleeve and round spigots. All of this is achieved while complying with the requirements of NFPA 90A and SMACNA and maintaining parameters of 2000 FPM, 4 IWG, and Class 2 – 250F for confident integration into the project without deviating from the specification.

FAQs

Which configurations can I order?

With a galvanized-steel sleeve 400 mm deep and 1.1 mm thick, or “-XS” without a sleeve. For round ducts, select BFD/R or BEFD/R with round spigots up to 32 inches.

What release and actuation options are available?

UL Listed fusible links at 165F or 212F, a 165F resettable thermoelectric device (TRD), or TRD + 212F fusible link. Motorized versions use BELIMO or HONEYWELL actuators.

What sizes and system limits should I plan for?

Single sections up to 36"x36" and multiple sections up to 72"x72". Designed for static systems to 2000 FPM and 4 IWG with leakage Class 2 at 250F.

How are they installed and what connections are accepted?

Typical vertical installation with bolted galvanized retaining angles, bolts kept outside blade travel. Breakaway connections per SMACNA (S-type slips). Steel mullions used when openings exceed UL size.
